You think this is bad, nobody has posted in the other RJ site in months. I
guess everyone moved to facebook.

Heh, I'm fine, just totally cut off from the internet apart from the
occasional burst on my phone (or when I sneak on during a lazy
afternoon). Wrangling my parents right now so don't have much time to
do anything else. Boy, glad they came over to help me relax.

The Shadow Rising is done, I will be posting findings soon.

Bumpity bump bump, Chucky throw us a fricking bone =D

Started treatment yet? Can't recall the timeframe. Parents gone yet?

You may think we don't need an occasional mundane detail, but we do,
my friend. What's Elsa up to? How's Janica?

Yes, the silence is deafening. Maybe we can talk about the upcoming George
RR Martin book or a post mortem on the now complete Erikson series.

Can't wait for the RR Martin book. No really, I can't wait, because he

Haven't finished the Crippled God. So no spoilers yet.

Is Quick Ben really a Tiste Andii then? That...doesn't exactly work
with book 1 but okay, kinda explains some other stuff.

Or did I misunderstand?

I think you misunderstood something. What made you think that? My
recollection us that Quick Ben is a conglomeration of 12 wizards in one
body. Before he joined the Bridgeburners, he and some fellow wizards were
being chased through a desert by the Malazans and one by one merged their
souls into one being with the ability to access several warrens. I don't
recall anything suggesting that he was Tiste...I think his description
doesn't really jive with Tiste...thin and brown skinned (not ebon black).

And yes, I am anxiously awaiting the GRRM book as well. I've had it on
order from Amazon for the last couple of years (and of course they kept
pushing back the delivery date). I can't believe the fat f** finally
finished something other than wild cards, selling paraphanalia on his
website and football fantasy games. What's it been, 5 years since the last
book?

Reread pages 58-59 of the floppy big softcover thing I bought, or try
to find it in your version if it's a different version of the book:

It says he is at the "Spire of Andii" and he says things like, and I
quote:

"Ah Mother, it's old blood, I don't deny it. Old and thin...Tell
Father I make no apologies for my choice..."

"And you, Mother, you should have kept me a child for ever, there
under your wing."

More Mother and Father stuff, which I think can only refer to Mother
Dark and Father Dark, as they are the only ones referred to in this
fashion.

Then it reveals the speaker is Quick Ben.

So reread and then what say you?

Now on to your other question:

I reread the pages you cited and I can see your point. This is one of those
confusing passages that seem to be a set up for a future Malazan book. Here
is QB in some warren or another stopping to grab a scepter which is implied
to be used/needed by the son of the Son of Darkness (Anomander Rake). In
the same passage he refers to Mother and Father in caps which usually means
(as you correctly inferred) Mother Dark and Father Light. He also keeps
referring to himself as "we" or "the two of us did the best I could" which
I assume (other fans correct me if I'm wrong) that he is referring to the
several souls within him. He also states that "its old blood...old and
thin" which could mean that one of those souls could have been Edur (the
spawn of Mother Dark and Father Light) or a descendant thereof. Physically,
he is not grey or ebon. He is described as thin, bald and dark skinned (but
not black like Kalam). I always pictured him as a dark Arab or Indian type.
He is the embodiment of 12 souls and that some of those souls are very OLD.
So keep reading the book.

SPOILER ALERT

there are no further references to this scene or reasons that this scene is
required for this story other than to set up something for a future book.
Let me know if you find something that makes me wrong.

Or I suppose it could have been an Andii or Liosan. However, all of
those sorts of mages are so much more powerful than the "regular"
mages, most of the time, because they use a higher order of magic
("Elder").

And, why wouldn't they have been the last mage standing, in that case?

And, he used 12 warrens against those 2 funny necromancers, and none
of them were Elder. So.

I think you're probably right but it's still not quite consistent.
Should be cool though, wherever Erikson is going with it.

Can't wait for the RR Martin book. No really, I can't wait, because he

Is Quick Ben really a Tiste Andii then? That...doesn't exactly work
with book 1 but okay, kinda explains some other stuff.
Or did I misunderstand?
-Aaron
I think you misunderstood something. What made you think that? My
recollection us that Quick Ben is a conglomeration of 12 wizards in one
body. Before he joined the Bridgeburners, he and some fellow wizards
were
being chased through a desert by the Malazans and one by one merged their
souls into one being with the ability to access several warrens. I
don't
recall anything suggesting that he was Tiste...I think his description
doesn't really jive with Tiste...thin and brown skinned (not ebon black).
Reread pages 58-59 of the floppy big softcover thing I bought, or try
It says he is at the "Spire of Andii" and he says things like, and I
"Ah Mother, it's old blood, I don't deny it.

As to the QB question, I'll look at that passage tonight and get back to
you.
sk
-Aaron
I reread the pages you cited and I can see your point. This is one of
those
confusing passages that seem to be a set up for a future Malazan book.
Here
is QB in some warren or another stopping to grab a scepter which is implied
to be used/needed by the son of the Son of Darkness (Anomander Rake). In
the same passage he refers to Mother and Father in caps which usually means
(as you correctly inferred) Mother Dark and Father Light. He also keeps
referring to himself as "we" or "the two of us did the best I could" which
I assume (other fans correct me if I'm wrong) that he is referring to the
several souls within him. He also states that "its old blood...old and
thin" which could mean that one of those souls could have been Edur (the
spawn of Mother Dark and Father Light) or a descendant thereof.
Physically,
he is not grey or ebon. He is described as thin, bald and dark skinned
(but
not black like Kalam). I always pictured him as a dark Arab or Indian
type.
He is the embodiment of 12 souls and that some of those souls are very OLD.
So keep reading the book.

There is more QB and Kalam. I did a quick Evelyn Wood on the rest of the QB
scenes to confirm that nothing else came from this scene.

As to not remembering: usually when I come across a scene that doesn't make
sense, I generally just go along with the story and file the scene at the
back of my head until the author fills in the blanks....in this case they
never got filled (along with a number of other details) when the story came
to its conclusion...I guess I just forgot about this one when I finished the
book. Waiting for you to catch up to discuss the loose ends.

Well, I don't think it's likely that he survived and took the soul of,
for example, an Edur or Andii in that desert run. Because their magic
is Elder and they would have whupped his ass.

It's possible the whole 12 souls so 12 warrens is a bit of a red
herring, because I believe in an earlier book it is revealed that
anyone who can access an Elder warren can also use all of the lesser
warrens that QB does. So, for example, an Edur or Andii could do what
QB does.

Since he does reference Mother and Father (the caps are, I think,
significant. Erikson made a point to NOT start the sentences with
those words, so that the caps would be recognized as intentional.),
I'm leaning toward Edur. Damn, he's one of those creepy dead-skin,
Native American looking types. Sorry, but Rhulad totally turned me off
of Edur. Hate those warmongers. Call me a racist. But I have plenty of
friends who are Andii!

Someone speculated on a forum that the Father is actually Draconus,
but...there's no reason that "father" would be capitalized. They keep
trying to go with his black skin and make him Andii, I think, but
there's a way around that. Below.

Well, on page 493 Ruthan Gudd suggests that QB might have been under a
glamour (you know, a faked appearance), so that takes away all the
physical appearance guessing. Also, some speculate that he seems to
shift a little between the physical appearances of those 12 souls.
Which, as I said, might be a ruse, but if not that can also explain
why he doesn't look like an Edur.

Still haven't finished but I think I'm on to something. No, not "on
something". ;P

Would only Tistes use the proper noun status for Mother and Father in
this context, or would anyone talking to or about Father Dark use the
capitals, even if they weren't Tiste? You know, like an honorific?

It seems that without this bit thrown in, the rest can be explained
away - the appearance, the reference to old blood, and so on.

I don't think they'd throw out the "Light" or "Dark" title the way
Tiste do.

And keep in mind, Father Light is only for the Edur and Liosan, Mother
Dark only for the Andii and Edur.

"Ah Mother, it's old blood, I don't deny it. Old and thin...Tell
Father I make no apologies for my choice..."
"And you, Mother, you should have kept me a child for ever, there
under your wing."
More Mother and Father stuff, which I think can only refer to Mother
Dark and Father Dark, as they are the only ones referred to in this fashion.
...Perhaps Father Light, you mean?
Oh right, good call. I never could figure out how a white guy and a
black chick made uber dark black folks. So I guess I got confused in
my head ;D

Actually, they made the grey guys (Tiste Edur). Mother Dark had immaculate
conceptions to create the Andii and Father Light somehow created the Liosan.

Right. I don't even want to THINK about Father Light's immaculate
conceptions. Urk.

Man this place is dead when he doesn't post. I'm going to have to
resurrect Piss of Wankers. If I can remember the password. Damn.

-Aaron
Yes, the silence is deafening. Maybe we can talk about the upcoming George
RR Martin book or a post mortem on the now complete Erikson series.
sk
Can't wait for the RR Martin book. No really, I can't wait, because he
couldn't be bothered to work his lazy ass on it.
Haven't finished the Crippled God. So no spoilers yet.
But since you brought it up...
Spoiler
Space
Is Quick Ben really a Tiste Andii then? That...doesn't exactly work
with book 1 but okay, kinda explains some other stuff.
Or did I misunderstand?
-Aaron
I think you misunderstood something.  What made you think that?  My
recollection us that Quick Ben is a conglomeration of 12 wizards in one
Page 58-59, at least in the floppy big softcover type of book I
bought. Here are some excerpts, and it is revealed that this is Quick
Ben:

He's described as being at "the Spar of Andii".

"'Ah Mother, it's old blood, I don't deny it...Tell Father I make no
apologies for my choice..."

"And you, Mother, you should have kept me a child for ever, there
under your wing."

More "Mother" and "Father" stuff, which I think can only mean "Mother
and Father Dark", which are the Andii parents. OK so maybe he's Tiste
Edur, how about that?

Anyways, reread that short passage and get back to me =D

And yes, I am anxiously awaiting the GRRM book as well.  I've had it on
order from Amazon for the last couple of years (and of course they kept
pushing back the delivery date).  I can't believe the fat f** finally
finished something other than wild cards, selling paraphanalia on his
website and football fantasy games.  What's it been, 5 years since the last
book?
DON'T CRITICIZE HIM YOU INGRATE, HE CAN TAKE AS LONG AS HE WANTS! HE
IS THE GREAT GRRM! WHO ARE YOU TO QUESTION HOW LONG IT IS BETWEEN
BOOKS?

That's what I recall as well, but ofg course I haven't read the last
three books or so. Maybe one of the twelve wizards he merged together
was a Tiste Andii of some stripe?

2005 was the release date on A Feast for Crows, so 6. And we have it
on order now too, because he seems to actually be getting there. Now
let's see if it was worth waiting for.

Sixth and final week of treatment about to start. Parents gone but due
to return in August or September sometime. I have six weeks off and
then hopefully the surgery right after, and they'll be back to help
out after that.

Nice to have retired parents who have nothing better to do than flit
around the globe spending the inheritance.

Well, I suppose so, but nobody else has asked and I thought you at
least had all the details you wanted and more.

But point taken.

What's Elsa up to?
Headstands, at the moment. Preparing to walk but head is too heavy.
Curse her mother's brains.

Also, her first contextually-accurate word is "num", so curse her
father's appetite as well.
Post by Aaron
How's Janica?
Weary and long-suffering, but doing okay. About the usual.
