Still reading it - enjoying it though, but not rushing through it which
I'd normally try to do...

Janica's still working on it, then it's my turn. In the meantime,
plenty of people over in alt.fan.grrm have finished it.

I'd have to install it at work, and I can't do that. I have a
thunderbird account, or I did, but there's no way to use it most of
the time I'm trying to post.

Holy shit! I'm about 100 pages out from the end, enjoying the
Taimandred moments, where GRRM gives a big "fuck you" to some major
fan theories. Or at least, seemingly does. Those of you who have
finished the book know what I'm talking about. I still know nothing.

That and he needs to move the plot along and not get bogged down like Jordan
did. Lot's of new characters to add to the plot, some of which were in the
background, brought forth in this book and quickly killed off (ie one prince
of Dorne). And now we have a new Targaryan to follow.

I have to go back and re-read Milisandre's "seeings" to see what really
happens with Jon (I don't think he is dead). I also have some thoughts
about who his true mother may be....we've already been given quite a few red
herrings. Dany needs to get off her ass and move out of Mereen. This is
taking too long to wrap up. But at least she's a dragon rider now.

Who's head is on Clegane's old body? I know we have a FrankenMaester on the
loose, but I hope this side story doesn't detract from the main one.

At work right now, so I'll think up some other points later. Feel free to
talk about your favorite "Taimandred moments."

Yeah, that was stupid. All the Mereen shit was pissing me off, but
he's clearly got a big change coming soon, there.

Well, I LIKE that bit. Dead baby isn't dead. Woot. Again cuz Dany was
starting to piss me off.

I have to go back and re-read Milisandre's "seeings" to see what really
happens with Jon (I don't think he is dead).
I didn't notice anything having to do with his getting stabbed in
particular, but she did always tell him to keep Ghost near.

I thought she meant for protection. If she meant so he can turn into a
warg, I'm gonna be pissed. Lame. Fake and gay. And not the nice gay.
Or the general sexual orientation gay. Like, 250 lb bodybuilder
sexually assaulting you in the locker room gay.

I'd rather he be an Other than that. I'd more rather she resurrect him
or summat.

 I also have some thoughts
about who his true mother may be....we've already been given quite a few red

Do tell. All I have are the red herrings. I didn't get any more ideas
from this book, but I may have not been paying enough attention.

In fact, I didn't know there were multiple red herrings...just the
one. Can't even remember who it was. One of the Targaryens, right?
Post by Aaron

Yeah, I'll give him that one since he clearly is on the verge of
moving that plot line, quickly.

Tyrion was a great pleasure to read, but damn if he didn't go ANYWHERE
the whole story. Just revealed different POVs to important plot
points.

Loved Varys at the end. The spider has some venom! He's a Targaryen
too, right? Something like that, IIRC. Glad he had at least a cameo.

Who's head is on Clegane's old body?
Hunh. I thought they might have used a different head for the gift,
but your idea makes more sense. I think. We haven't been given enough
of the rules about zombies to know what's legit and what's not.

Could it be Tywin's head? ;D

They said he never removes helm or armor anyway, so it could be any
head.

As the Dornish said, though, if another 8 foot tall knight is running
around, they'll know they were betrayed. Well...

I think you mean a Qyborg. A Mountainstein. But there certainly is a
"Frankenstein's Maester" =D

I'm sure it won't be too much of a distraction. I'm waiting for the
dragon to destroy him like he were, I dunno, a gangly loser nicknamed
"Frog".

Jon was one, as I was kinda digging him gettin' some from Dany. Maybe
he can still do it as an Other. Or as Ghost ;D

I like how Dany has kind of lost control of her dragons. Aegon was
another moment, although we weren't really thinking he would be alive
because there were no hints.

Good trick about Rattleshirt and Rayder.

And what do you think of the end? That note from Ramsay? Is he lying?
What's with the specific information? Because, it was Mance Rayder
killing all those inside Winterfell, right? Why did the capture and
all that happen off-screen, not to mention the battle? What is going
on there?

Ned Stark had a Dayne lover who committed suicide after delivery of a still
born daughter. Maybe dead baby, maybe not..maybe girl, maybe not. = one
red herring.
Maester apprentice talking to Sam at the tower about he and Jon being milk
brothers (or whatever the term is) and that Jon was the son of some serving
maid or other. Maybe Lady Dayne's maid or maybe not. Or just another red
herring.
Personally, I think that Rhaenar Targaryan raped Stark's sister and Jon is
the result. I don't remember anywhere stating how Ned's sister dies, only
that she was abducted by Targaryan which kicked off a war (the face that
launched a thousand knights). Ned wants to keep his sister's rep intact.
They kept talking about how Ned's sister was crowned queen of beauty and
abducted and what kicked off the war, etc, etc in this book (a lot). But
if you have some other thoughts....

Yes. He's been planning this with our fat friend in Pentos for a very long

Probably. He must have gotten more from Rayder's female accomplices than I

Set up for the next book. Should be interesting to find out what really
happened. We have traitorous Karstarks in Stannis' camp and White Harbor
Stark supportors in Bolton camp. However, we have a banker arriving in the
Stannis camp with info regarding the Karstarks. So how did this all play
out. And if Bolton really won, why didn't he get his hands on his bride?

Also, forgot I liked how the junior Starks are developing (with the
exception of the youngest son whose character is pointless).

that she was abducted by Targaryan which kicked off a war (the face that
launched a thousand knights).  Ned wants to keep his sister's rep intact.
They kept talking about how Ned's sister was crowned queen of beauty and
abducted and what kicked off the war, etc, etc in this book (a lot).   But
if you have some other thoughts....
Yeah I think the last option as well. These were the ones I
remembered, but couldn't quite recite yesterday. Thanks for the
reminders.

Loved Varys at the end. The spider has some venom! He's a Targaryen
too, right? Something like that, IIRC. Glad he had at least a cameo.
Yes.  He's been planning this with our fat friend in Pentos for a very long
time.  Even to the point of using Viserys and Dany as decoys....who would
have thought Aegon 6 was still alive.  Now he's taken a more active role.
Loved it.

Hunh. I thought they might have used a different head for the gift,
but your idea makes more sense. I think. We haven't been given enough
of the rules about zombies to know what's legit and what's not.
Could it be Tywin's head? ;D
Or maybe no head at all. Qyburn wanted to experiment with death.....

I like how Dany has kind of lost control of her dragons. Aegon was

because there were no hints.
Good trick about Rattleshirt and Rayder.
Sleight of hand.
This is not the wildling you are looking for.

Post by Aaron
And what do you think of the end? That note from Ramsay? Is he lying?
Probably.  He must have gotten more from Rayder's female accomplices than I
would have thought.  Again, don't know if we should believe Mance and
Stannis are really dead or just some lies to lure Jon into a trap.
Lies, I think. What a waste, otherwise. And Melisandre would have seen
SOMETHING I'm sure.
Post by Aaron
What's with the specific information? Because, it was Mance Rayder
killing all those inside Winterfell, right?
Yes.
Why did the capture and
all that happen off-screen, not to mention the battle? What is going
on there?
Set up for the next book.  Should be interesting to find out what really
happened.  We have traitorous Karstarks in Stannis' camp and White Harbor
Stark supportors in Bolton camp.  However, we have a banker arriving in the
Stannis camp with info regarding the Karstarks.  So how did this all play
out.  And if Bolton really won, why didn't he get his hands on his bride?
Ahh, true about the Karstarks. Perhaps they sent word to Ramsay and
that's how he got all his fake information?
Post by Aaron
Also, forgot I liked how the junior Starks are developing (with the
exception of the youngest son whose character is pointless).

You meant Bran, right? I was jibing that the actual youngest son isn't

In fact, I didn't know there were multiple red herrings...just the

Ned Stark had a Dayne lover who committed suicide after delivery of a still
born daughter. Maybe dead baby, maybe not..maybe girl, maybe not. = one
red herring.
Maester apprentice talking to Sam at the tower about he and Jon being milk
brothers (or whatever the term is) and that Jon was the son of some serving
maid or other. Maybe Lady Dayne's maid or maybe not. Or just another red

Rickon's character is worthless; he's alive and still making his way to
White Harbor. Bran is going to be a greenseer and Arya is training to be a
ninja; I can see both being used in future books. We've already seen
inklings of Bran "materializing" and trying to speak to "Reek" (rhymes with

I have to go back and re-read Milisandre's "seeings" to see what really
happens with Jon (I don't think he is dead).
I didn't notice anything having to do with his getting stabbed in
particular, but she did always tell him to keep Ghost near.
I thought she warned him about daggers in the snow.
Post by Aaron
I thought she meant for protection. If she meant so he can turn into a
warg, I'm gonna be pissed. Lame. Fake and gay. And not the nice gay.
Ooh, of course, that was an option I missed when I read that scene.
Why not, it was set up in the prologue after all? I don't think that
would be lame.
Post by Aaron
I'd rather he be an Other than that. I'd more rather she resurrect him

The Coldhands option and the Catelyn option are open to him.

Well, we can almost rule out Ashara Dayne, because she gave stillbirth

Yeah, Theon and Jeyne ended up with Asha, Asha was with Stannis, and
yet Ramsay has claimed to have killed Stannis and doesn't have Theon
or Jeyne. So something's gone funky there.

That and he needs to move the plot along and not get bogged down like Jordan
did. Lot's of new characters to add to the plot, some of which were in the
background, brought forth in this book and quickly killed off (ie one prince

Certainly not getting bogged down, though. It's all moving things

we've already been given quite a few red

taking too long to wrap up. But at least she's a dragon rider now.
By the time she gets around to returning to Meereen, Selmy will have
the whole place on a war footing, if not actually mid-war or
completely destroyed already. So that'll be fine.
Post by Steve
Who's head is on Clegane's old body?
Was it really Clegane's head they sent to Dorne? I sort of assumed
they kept his helmet on so nobody would recognise the Mountain, but it
could just as easily (more easily) be any of the other test subjects
Qyburn was using.
Post by Steve
I know we have a FrankenMaester on the
loose, but I hope this side story doesn't detract from the main one.
It's been coming for a while. Withy Kevan dead and Cersei exonerated,
we might see some more of that magnificent chaos that Varys likes so
much.

Janica's still working on it, then it's my turn. In the meantime,
plenty of people over in alt.fan.grrm have finished it.
I WAS working my way through it, but then I finally obtained Bruce
Sterling's Islands in the Net, and then Stephenson's Reamde showed up
on my doorstep.

That said, love what I've read so far. The Tyrion chapters are of
course, choice. And the Jon chapters are wonderfully gripping, for
what basically amounts to AFFC-y politiking.
